Evaluation: Question 5 - Part 3

Within my film opening I included many features that would appeal to my target audience such as the actors, costume, fonts, mise en scene and music.

Firstly, the actors I used were two teenage girls in the age range of my target audience. This meant that my target audience could easily relate to the characters and put themselves in my shoes. However the male portion of my target audience would find the film less appealing but may still be interested in watching.

The costume that the character wore appealed to my target audience as they enjoy characters like ghosts and demons, which was found in my primary research as the preferred type of character was a ghost/demon. Screen Shot 2017-01-27 at 09.16.27.png

The font that I used was called “october crow”,  I used it for the main titles and used after effects to create a blood effect. From my primary research I found that people were most attracted to the white scratchy fonts and red fonts. Therefore I decided to incorporate both the white scratchy font and red blood. This means that my film opening will appeal to my audience.

The mise en scene that was used within the costume appeals to the film fanatics with my target audience. The main character wore a white top with rips and red blood on. The people who enjoy film within my audience would infer that the blood on the white top implies that her innocence has been corrupted.

Finally, the music that I used, was stereotypical horror music, this appeals to the people within my target audience who enjoy typical horror films as they find that sort of music the most entertaining. However this portion is only half my target audience as some people in my primary research said that they preferred unconventional horror features and music.

Evaluation: Question 5 - Part 2

Evaluation: Question 5 - Part 1

What research and planning did you do in order to create a successful production in appealing to your target audience? How did it affect your ideas?

In my research and planning i prepared for a successful production that appeals to my target audience. I researched who my audience were and and what they like. I planned for a smooth production using shot lists and storyboards. I will now explain my research and planning blog posts:

Researching Genre:
In my researching genre post I explored the stereotypical character, narrative and sounds. I chose to use the setting of the woods as it is stereotypical f a horror film. My target audience of 15-25 years mostly like horror film and so a setting of a spooky wood would appeal to them. In addition to this i used the character of the demon possessed child. This will appeal to horror fans and they enjoy being scared by characters like the one in my film opening.
Textual Analysis 1:
In the first textual analysis, I researched the film opening of ‘Let It Be’. In the post I explored how the character of Death is wearing black and how the colour usually portrays darkness and death. In our film opening we also used costume and makeup to show that the character had lost her innocence. This appeals to specifically the people who are interested in film within our target audience as they will clearly be able to see the connotations of blood on a white top.
Textual Analysis 2:
Here i looked into the film ‘Hush’ which uses a horror themed logo animations. I have incorporated this into mine by using a jump scare in the logo. This appeals to my target audience as many like jump scares because of their interest in horror films.
Textual Analysis 3:
In ‘Cabin In The Woods’ sound is used to create a jump scare as they use an out of place scream sound effect. This again would appeal to the people in our target audience who enjoy jump scares and so we used jump scare of an unexpected harsh sound.
Primary Audience Research:
In my primary research I asked people from my target audience what sort of font most appealed to them. Most agreed that they thought the white scratchy fonts were the most appealing. In my film title I used a white scratchy font which will appeal to my target audience.
Costume and Prop Research:
From my costume and prop research I found that for my film I wanted to use a ghost girl that looked as if she were hale dead. This effect would please the horror fans in my target audience.
Logo Research:
In my logo research I found that other films that target the same audience as me use logo animation that builds tension by using horror characters, setting, sound, and lighting. With my target audience I used dark colours, and horror sound effect that build tension for the people in my target audience that enjoy the tension of horror films.

Evaluation: Question 4

From both my primary and secondary research I have found that 15-24-year-olds enjoy horror films and like elements such as jump scares and chase scenes. These features are thrilling and excting for the audience as they create an adrenaline rush. Older generations, however, prefer much calmer films as they don't like adrenaline. They have a more mature outlook and so don't enjoy fantasy.  The class for my film is aimed at C1. I decided this in m secondary research using the Perl and Dean website as the C1 category populates most of the country.

Evaluation: Question 3

What production company would distribute my film?

My film is more of an independent film rather that a major film. This means that companies such as Universal and Paramount probably wont be interested in producing and distributing my film. However independent companies or online streaming companies might be interested. These companies are Netflix, Amazon Prime, Film 4 and Artisan Entertainment. Netflix distributed similar film such as 'Hush' and 'Invitation'. Amazon Prime distributed films such as 'It Follows' and 'The Conjuring'. Film 4 hasn't produced many horror films and so out film might fill a gap in their market. Finally Artisan entertainment distributed 'The Blare Witch Project' which was a student project. This means that they might be interested in distributing out film.

How would your film be advertised?

My film would be advertised on people's online streaming accounts such as Netflix and Amazon Prime. 'Friend' would come up on people's home screens and recommended sections. The websites track what people watch and so will advertise our film to people who they know will be interested.

With the rise of web 2.0, films are being distributed more on the web like I've shown above.  The internet also uses cookies. This means that they can advertise other products such as films to people who they think might me interested based on their searches. This means that advertisements for our film would be more direct. Furthermore, people who are interested could follow the film's social media accounts like twitter and facebook. This will mean that they are always up to date and get inside information about the film.  In addition, there can be blogs about films and online newsletters that get emailed to the subscribers with extra information. The internet is bringing the audience closer tot the film and so people are more engaged and active for further releases.

Final Product

Response to my feedback

In my feedback I was asked to make my product more clear as a film opening. To do this, to add to the present day part, I added a title showing that what the audience is about to see was in the past. This gives the impression that what they are about to see is extra information which is common in film openings.

Screenshots of Editing

Here I edited my main title of after effects. I used for layers of animation, overlays and text. I used a youtube tutorial to create this but added my own twists by using different colours and fonts. I used a red blood animation to match the action that occurred in the previous scene as it included blood.

Here I added flickering titles in the font 'October Crow' which I downloaded as it matches the horror genre.
Here I added the main title into the film opening and continued the music from the last shot so it flows.

I used colour effects in Premier Pro to give the footage a more creepy and cold feel and so that it contrasted with the footage used for modern day.
Here I added a transition to make the flow of the video better as the screen is very dark and there was a big contrast to the mainly white shot.
